Anita Blake is the main character in a long, still-continuing series of books by author Laurell K. Hamilton. As of July 2008, there are 16 completed novels in the Anita Blake series, plus a few published short stories. The Anita Blake series of books is extremely popular, spawning a series of graphic novels as well. Ms. Hamilton has also written another series of novels dealing primarily with the fae, called the Merry Gentry series.

Anita lives in a world where magic, vampires, lycanthropes, zombies and other 'other worldly' things are real and are part of her everyday life. She lives in St. Louis, Missouri. Anita is a professional animator. She has the innate power to temporarily raise the dead, and she does this for a living - a very good living. She also has a two other quasi-related part-time jobs.

The first is as a special consultant to the Regional Preternatural Investigation Taskforce (RPIT) of the St. Louis Police Department (SLPD) for crimes of a specific preternatural involvement. These are often of a very violent nature. The other is as the designated Vampire Executioner for the surrounding tri-state area. She stakes vampires that have broken the law. This job was much easier when they weren't considered citizens and vampires didn't have any rights under the law.
