Addison V. Clarke a court ruling that deemed vampires were citizens of the United States before the law. This happened about 2 years before 'Guilty Pleasures'.
alpha a were of very high level power, a dominant individual
alternate universe
- A timestream which splits off from a known (or real) one and progresses in a different manner from that base timestream.
- A hypothetical world situated in a different dimension of space and time than the real world consisting of the universe known and experienced by human and/or other beings.
- An imaginary realm, often a variant form of the real world, depicting a different way events could have unfolded or the universe could have functioned.

animalistic vampire a human who rises as an uncontrollable vampire after being bitten by several vampires. See also revenant. tLaC
animal to call in reference to master vampires, this is an animal that responds to their influence or call. They can exert influence on the behavior or actions of this animal.
in specific reference to weres, this is an were of the vampire's animal type who has been bonded to the vampire. It is similar to a human servant bond but not as complex.







animator a person, generally a human, who has a skill, ability or power to reach and re-animate the dead. They generally employ rituals to accomplish this. There are varying degrees of talent. See also the glossary entries for vaudun priests and Necromancers. GP
Anitaverse a colloquial term for the world, universe, or alternate reality where the Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series takes place triscut



ardeur a vampire hunger... for lust rather than blood.
Unlike the blood lust, it is difficult to fully sate this hunger. In French it means heat or flame.

Blood District an area near the Riverfront area of St. Louis where a large number of vampire owned/run businesses are located. Also known as 'the District' and as 'Blood Square' by those less enamoured with it.
Bolverk the person in a pack (wolf) who meets out punishments that the Ulfric does not feel comfortable giving. Translation: 'doer of evil deeds'. NiC

stories that have been written by fans about the characters, worlds and cultures that have been created by another author.

Freyja a werewolf who has begun to contest for the right to lead the pack; traditionally, the Freyja will call the pack leader out to fight to the death. A wolf must reach the second in command status before they can issue the challenge for leadership. BM

Leoparde Lionne a term for a wereleopard leader who protects the pard actively. BO
Lion passant a term for an alpha wereleopard who may lead but does not give or offer active protection to the members of the pard. BO

lycanthropy It is defined as the ability or power of a human being to transform into a wolf, leopard, rat, hyena, or other type of animal (mostly predators). It is often used generically to indicate the transformation of a human into any animal form, though technically, that is a therianthrope. In the Anitaverse world the predominant form of lycanthropy is caused by a communicable virus. There are also inherited forms and curses.
It is sometimes, also, referred to as shapeshifting.

marks a metaphysical exchange between vampires and other beings, typically human, to allow greater bonding between the two. There are four marks that can be exchanged, each increasing the bond. Once given, they cannot be removed except by the death of one of the participants. This death may damage, even kill, the remaining partner. GP, CotD



Master of the City A master vampire with enough power to hold a large group of vampires and the territory they occupy together. (MotC)

A Master vampire who is strong enough to control other vampires in a territory. Lesser masters have to ask permission to stay in the city. This vampire is answerable to the Vampire Council.

master vampire a vampire who has gained enough inner power to be able to raise themselves from the daytime death; A vampire with enough inner or personal power to be able to rise from the day death by his/her own will/strength.






menage a trois a sexual relationship between three people
metaphysical not on this plane; having no body or form or substance; of, coming from, or relating to forces or beings that exist outside the natural world; alternate reality or plane



munin the spirits of past pack members that were consumed by the pack to preserve their memories for times of need (wolf) BO, BM, NiC



mythThe word itself comes from the Greek "mythos" which originally meant "speech" or "discourse" but which later came to mean "fable" or "legend". The word "myth" can be defined as a story of forgotten or vague origin, basically religious or supernatural in nature, which seeks to explain or rationalize one or more aspects of the world or a society. All myths are, at some stage, actually believed to be true by the peoples of the societies that used or originated the myth.

Skoll the primary enforcer of a pack (wolf). The skoll and hati of the pack both enforce the will of the Ulfric and protect him.



Sourdre de sang Translation: 'Fountain of Blood'. The source of a vampire bloodline. Jean-Claude gains enough power to become the source of his own line. This is a rare occurrence, only three vampires have done it in the last 800 years.
A Fountain of Blood, a vampire that has become strong enough that they no longer have to obey their maker and thus can found their own line of vampires.

stalking horse a weaker vampire fronting for another more powerful one to draw out challengers; A vampire who acts as a front for another more powerful vampire drawing challenges to that vampire's power base. GP, BB

Temoin a Master of the City's second-in-command



trimate a member of a triumvirate (this is a fanon term, not canon)
Triumvirate this is a metaphysical and physical bond between a master and two servants [e.g. master vampire, human servant and lycanthrope servant]. The one who binds the servants, uses their energy to keep the others alive. They have have mind-to-mind communications and the three share their energies, abilities and emotions. This binding, the interweaving and sharing of energies, means that when one part of the triumvirate dies, the other two will likely perish as well.



Ulfric the King or leader of a pack (wolf)



vampire a former human who has been infected by another vampire, killed and has risen. They must drink human blood in order to survive, although for some vampires there are other methods in which they can feed.
vampire counsellor a person who is skilled at counselling and controlling the newly risen. CotD, BO
vampire executioner Someone who has been given the authority (licensed) to carry out 'writs of execution' issued against vampires. Without a writ, it is considered murder to kill a vampire. (Since the Addison V. Clarke ruling making vampires legal citizens.) Writs are issued when a vampire breaks the law. All






vampire servant a non-master vampire who has been metaphysically tied to another being - not a vampire. It appears to be similar to a human servant, but it VERY rare - even unheard of before Anita binds Damian. BM, NiC
vaudun priest a vaudun practitioner with the ability to control the dead. Very ritualistic and also religious. See also necromancer and animator.



werewolf enforcer an alpha werewolf who has been assigned the task of making sure the Ulfric's wishes/orders are carried out. They also provide protection for the Ulfric. See also Hati and Skoll







white goat a euphemism for a human sacrifice CotD?



zombies the dead re-animated through ritual and or magic, they are under the control of the person who raised them. All

i just figured I'd add some input about teh ardeur. in French it means Flame or Fire. i think it talks about it in one of the books, but i dont remember which.
