Anita Blake is the main character in a long, still-continuing series of books by author Laurell K. Hamilton. As of September 2007, there are 15 completed books in the series, plus a few published short stories.

A sixteenth book, featuring Jason, is underway. It is to be called Blood Noir. It is scheduled to be released May 27, 2008.

Anita lives in a world where magic, vampires, lycanthropes, zombies and other 'other worldly' things are 'real' and are part of her everyday life. Anita is a professional 'animator'. She has the innate power to temporarily raise the dead, and she does this for a living - a very good living. She also has a two other quasi-related 'part-time' jobs.

The first is as a special consultant to the Regional Preternatural Investigation Taskforce (RPIT) of the St. Louis Police Department (SLPD) for crimes of a specific preternatural involvement. These are often of a very violent nature. And the other is as the designated Vampire Executioner for the surrounding tri-state area. She stakes vampires that have broken the law. This job was much easier when they weren't considered citizens and vampires didn't have any rights under the law.

Character Description

In GP we only have her described in her wererat form. In tLuC, she is described as a small woman in her mid-fifties, with salt-and-pepper hair cut short and neat in a no-nonsense style. By the time of NiC, she'd grown her hair out a little, to "cut straight just above her shoulders. Anita says: 'Her hair was longer than the first time I met her, but everything else was the same. I'd never seen her wear makeup, and her face still looked pleasant and attractive in a fifty-plus sort of way--though I'd discovered she was actually well over sixty.' She certainly didn't look it." In ID, she describes herself as "over fifty, not dead."

Gabriel has heavy, sensual features. His lips are full and his brows are heavy. His eyes are liquid grey leopard eyes; they don't come all the way back to human any more. He has kitty fangs, top and bottom, as well. His hair is curly and dark, curling near his collar and falling over his eyes. He has several piercings, including his ears, nipple, and navel. He prefers leather clothing, often appearing in tight leather pants, boots, and a leather trench coat, with a tight muscle shirt or t shirt underneath, and accessorizes with a spiked leather glove. Mr. Oliver: He was called The EarthMover ( he could cause the ground to shake like an earthquake with his powers). He was a small man, like a midget, but having almost no chin and a sloping jaw, drawing attention to his wide nose and prominent eyebrow ridge.
Oliver was the oldest vampire known to Anita, being over a million years old. As a Master Vampire, his animal to call is the snake. He was one of the members of the Vampire Council. Oliver had a Human Servent named Karl Inger, and a Lamia named Melanie as his animal to call.
He was killed by Anita during the fight at the Circus of the Damned; she stuck an ash stake into his chest and ripped out his windpipe. Karl Inger did not survive his Master's death and Melanie now works at the COTD as an attraction.
One of the reasons that Anita killed Mr Oliver was his plan was to remove Jean-Claude as Master of The City, becoming the new Master so that he could control all the city's vampires. Once that was done, he intended to make them attack the city's humans so that vampires were made illegal again. He did not agree with the current legislation and wanted things to go back to the way they were, with vampires being hunted.

Yasmeen: A master vampire of dubious loyalty brought in to help Jean-Claude. Enjoys tormenting her human servant with jealousy.

Alejandro: A vampire in The Earthmover's retinue. He gave Anita all four marks to steal her from Jean Claude and was killed by her in the duel between Jean-Claude and The Earthmover at the Circus.

This situation changed with Anita accepted Truth's oath on behalf of Jean-Claude, and Jean-Claude subsequently oathed Wicked.

Character Description

Avery is described as being "of medium height", with short brown hair, and brown eyes. His height is later described as being six feet, but seeming shorter. Anita describes him as having "a face that was handsome in a soft, unfinished way, as if he'd been barely legal when they killed him." He is neat, tidy, and organised, both with his person and his home.

Initially a member of the Church of Eternal Life, Avery later 'jumped ship' to join Jean-Claude's kiss. However, in the Harlequin, Avery was at the Church when the Harlequin arrived there, perhaps indicating that his ties with Malcolm were not completely severed.

Character Factoids

Avery is a neat and tidy person, and his apartment indicates that he is financially well-off;
He was a suspect in the 'stripper murders' in Incubus Dreams, but was innocent.
Anita was able to 'call him' using power borrowed from Malcolm. She could 'taste' his innocence, and obtained Malcolm's permission to use the marks with Jean-Claude to 'roll' Avery, to 'see' what had happened in his apartment.
A vampire named 'Nellie' had attempted to recruit Avery to join with her kiss, who under Vittorio's leadership, had murdered the strippers. Upset by what had occurred, Avery had gone to the Church to seek Malcolm's help.
Avery is a very weak vampire, so much so that The Harlequin were easily able to roll him and talk 'through' him, in order to telephone Anita.

Synopsis:

In The Lunatic Café, Anita learns of Richard's alpha status in the pack and his conflict in becoming ulfric and gaining control of the pack. She learns from Edward that lycanthropes are making snuff films. Anita discovers that several lycanthropes have gone missing recently. She discovers that witches have used the skins of some of those that are missing to shape-shift. During a date, Richard proposes to Anita and she accepts. Jean-Claude is furious when he hears, but sensing Anita's doubts he agrees not to kill Richard if she will agree to date them both - she accepts. Anita, Richard and Edward are captured by police who want to illegally hunt lycanthropes. Anita is locked in a cage with Jason, a recently turned werewolf. She is saved from being eaten by Richard's alpha dominance over Jason. They manage to kill the hunters and escape.

Important Revelations:

The Lunatic Café is notable in that it alters the structure of the previous three novels. In each of the original three Anita Blake novels, Anita initially encounters (1) a client or other situation related to her job as an animator; (2) a crime scene related to her job as police consultant; and (3) some dramatic tension relating to her connections to the St. Louis preternatural world, particularly Jean-Claude. Ultimately in the first three novels, each of the situations turns out to be related to a single criminal scheme, which Anita confronts and defeats. In The Lunatic Café, this pattern is altered -- although Anita encounters the usual early events: (1) a request from George Smitz to investigate his wife's disappearance; (2) a person murdered by a shapeshifter; and (3) a demand by Marcus that Anita solve a series of Shapeshifters' disappearances, the events do not turn out to be related. Instead, although Anita believes that they are related, the disappearances and murders turn out to be the result of three unrelated criminal schemes.
Anita's habit of protecting the weak comes strongly into play in The Lunatic Café, as she extends protection to Irving Griswold and also acts to protect Louie and Robert. This pattern, together with her inability to back down from confrontation, draws her deeper and deeper into St. Louis's supernatural society, often against her will.
The Lunatic Café is notable as one of the few Anita Blake novels that does not involve Anita's powers as a necromancer. Other than sensing mystical energy, Anita does not use her supernatural abilities in this book.

Explanation of the Title:

Within the novel, the "Lunatic Café" is the name of a restaurant that is operated by and serves as a base for St. Louis area shapeshifters. It is owned by the lupa, Raina Wallis. It is also located near the university campus. It is not an 'outed' shifter hangout.

In GP we see Louis first in the restaurant where Anita has come to meet with Rafael. He has brown eyes, so dark they were almost black. His face is square; he has a small build and a slender body. The muscles in his forearms are very pronounced. His hair is dark, and he usually keeps it short. In LuC, we learn that he is five foot six, with black eyes, and his hair is straight and fine.

Explanation of the Title:

The book is named for a vampire bar/theme restaurant location in the story.

"As you walked through the doors there was a poster from the 1970s movie Burnt Offerings. Oliver Reed and Bette Davis staring down at you. There was a life-size waxwork of Christopher Lee as Dracula in the bar. There was one wall with framed caricatures of horror stars of the sixties and seventies, floor to ceiling, no tables allowed to obstruct the view." page 162

(The fictional restaurant is itself named after the real-world 1976 haunted house movie, Burnt Offerings.)
